Behind the Scenes: Designing and Building a Handmade Saddle Stand
Where decades of woodworking experience meet equestrian tradition.
Every saddle stand we build at Greentrunksnmore begins long before the first board is cut. It starts with years of woodworking experience, countless hours in the workshop, and a commitment to creating a saddle stand that is both beautiful and functional.
What appears to be a simple piece of furniture is actually the result of years spent refining and improving the design. Through trial, testing, and hands-on use, we learned that a quality saddle stand must do more than support a saddle. It must properly distribute weight, remain stable on uneven surfaces, provide convenient storage, and withstand years of daily use in barns, tack rooms, homes, and show environments.
Over the years, we experimented with different dimensions, angles, materials, and construction methods to create a design that balances strength, appearance, and practicality. Every curve and measurement serves a purpose. The saddle tree support is shaped to properly cradle the saddle, helping maintain its form while providing secure storage. The base is designed for stability, and every component is engineered to withstand the demands of active equestrian life.
Once a design has been perfected, the building process begins.
Each saddle stand starts with carefully selected hardwood chosen for its strength, durability, grain pattern, and natural character. We inspect every board before it enters production, looking for the qualities that will ensure both beauty and longevity.
From there, each piece is individually measured, cut, assembled, sanded, stained, and finished by hand. We don't rely on mass production or assembly-line manufacturing. Instead, every stand receives the same level of care and attention we would expect in a piece built for our own barn.
The sanding process alone requires multiple stages to achieve a smooth, furniture-quality finish. Corners are softened, surfaces are refined, and every detail is inspected before moving on to staining and sealing. The finish not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood but also helps protect the stand from the wear and tear of everyday use.
Whether a customer chooses a rich mahogany finish, a rustic weathered gray, classic walnut, or a custom color, each saddle stand is finished by hand to highlight the unique character of the wood. No two pieces are ever exactly alike, making every stand a one-of-a-kind creation.
Throughout the entire process, craftsmanship remains at the center of everything we do. The lessons learned from years of woodworking experience guide every decision, from selecting materials to applying the final coat of finish. It's this dedication to quality that transforms raw lumber into a functional piece of equestrian furniture built to serve riders for generations.
"Great craftsmanship isn't achieved in a day. It's developed through years of learning, refining, and taking pride in every piece that leaves the workshop."
At Greentrunksnmore, we don't simply build saddle stands—we create heirloom-quality pieces designed to protect valuable tack, complement the equestrian lifestyle, and become a lasting part of a rider's story. Every stand represents years of experience, thoughtful design, and a commitment to building products that are as dependable as the people who use them.
